Sliding sash windows were originally designed and created for practical reasons. They can be opened for ventilation and easy cleaning without intruding on the exterior, and so do not create a hazard situation to close-by pathways or pedestrian areas.

The design has stood the test of time for centuries and all listed buildings that have sash windows installed already must comply with regulations requiring that sash windows be replaced or repaired as necessary. That means timber frames, cords and weights. However, times have moved on and technology has played a part in the upgraded design of certain sash window components.

The cords can now be replaced with a much longer lasting type, which have a strong polypropylene core. The glass can be replaced with Pilkington Optilam™ Phon, which is a high quality acoustic laminated glass that offers excellent noise reduction. Pilkington Optilam™ Phon can also be incorporated with Pilkington K Glass™, which is designed with insulation in mind.

Old sash windows that stick, rattle and let in dust are now a thing of the past thanks to the incorporation of brushpile strips. These low-friction brushpile strips create a perfect seal, eliminate draughts and dust and also let the windows slide up and down with ease.
